How to get a certificate and start using it

*** NOTE ***

Windows users may obtain a KCA certificate automatically through the NetIDManager application. Windows clients in the FERMI domain should automatically be updated with the DOEGrids and KCA root certificates required for services to validate user certificates. Unix and Mac users may utilize the get-cert utilities to simply the KCA process.

Author's note Jan 24, 2006:

Both at Fermilab and beyond, computing resources and web sites are increasingly requesting authentication (identity verification) by means of PKI Certificates. The Computing Division is implementing this in several areas, e.g., DocDB. Consequently, you may soon find that you need a certificate for a variety of tasks that didn't require authentication previously.
